Line Of Sight: W. Allan Hancock, White Rock Gallery, White Rock, BC
Artist’s Statement:
I don’t really go looking specifically for inspiration. I don’t go on a lot of big reference-gathering trips to remote locations. For the most part, I am inspired by things I see while living everyday life: family outings and trips, out kayaking or taking a walk, or even driving to the grocery store. The majority of my inspiration happens close to home, what I see every day...what comes into my line of sight. That being said, I can’t turn off being an artist – I’m always looking around, always seeing things, always open to inspiration.
As a side note, I think it’s fascinating how what one person sees, another will see differently, and in some cases, not see at all. Quite often, much of what happens in our own backyards can go unnoticed. It is perhaps this idea that I try to draw attention to through my artwork…that we don’t have to be miles from civilization to notice and appreciate nature.
The art is where the fun (and frustration) begins…composing each piece, taking your ideas and inspiration to create something, hopefully, meaningful that will speak to you as the artist and also connect with those who view it - taking your inspiration, your vision, and sharing with others how you see as an artist. I can be amazed by the overall beauty of a location or landscape, but I am constantly looking for little things that catch my eye. Light and shadows play a huge role but I am also drawn to line, shape, texture and space. In my work I try to eliminate the noise, simplify and focus on the ideas.
